Two new babies!

My sister had her second child on December 26th -- a little girl named Mia Helen -- and my good friend D. had her first child yesterday, also a little girl, named Alison Marie. I haven't seen little Alison yet; hopefully mother and baby will be up for company this weekend. But the day little Mia was born my husband and I made an impromptu drive of about 400 miles to see her and her family. I've never held a baby on the first day of his or her life before. It was amazing. My husband was captivated. We also got to play with our little two-year-old nephew, which is a rare occurrence.

When I spoke with D. on the phone last night, she said, "Now it's your turn." Yikes! I'll be 5 and a half months pregnant tomorrow; four calendar months and one week from my due date.

4th Prenatal Appointment

I'm feeling good. Had an appointment this morning; have gained six pounds since my last appointment, which put me out of the recommended range. Not hard to figure out why, since I've been eating a lot and too much of the wrong stuff. The midwife thought if I exercised more and watched the junk I could get back on track. My uterus is measuring at 23 weeks and I'm about 21 weeks. She said we'd just see where I was at the next appointment. I'm trying not to worry, but now that twins have been ruled out, the other possibilities are not ones to wish for. All I can do right now is control the things I can control -- my diet and exercise.

Five Months Pregnant and All's Well

Earlier this afternoon I was sitting at my computer here at work for over an hour, after having had a snack. The baby was moving like crazy! I usually feel movements when I am home, lying down. This is first time I felt movement here at work. I think he/she is moving furniture or something -- lots of activity!

Ultrasound!

It went great! We are having one baby (whew!) and while the ultrasound person didn't see any boy parts and leaned toward it being a girl, she said, "Don't run out and buy all pink clothes based on this!" The baby was really active so the technician had a hard time getting the shots she needed. This was the best grainy black and white TV show I've ever seen. :-) We saw the baby's heart, brain, arms, legs -- very cool.

It's amazing how much closer I feel to the baby now, especially since I realized some of the random tingly feelings I'd been feeling when drifting off to sleep are almost certainly the little one moving around. I guess I'd been expecting repeated sensations in one spot. Now that I see what a circus he/she's got going on in there, the randomness makes a lot more sense.

Finally! Authorization for Our Ultrasound!

Hurray! I just got a phone call from the nurse that we've finally, at long great last, gotten the insurance authorization for our Level II ultrasound. So next Tuesday we will get our first glimpses of this little one (or two?).

I didn't mention this in my last post, but my uterus measured larger than expected for 16 weeks at my last appointment. There are a bunch of things that could cause this, including extra amniotic fluid, a growth spurt for the baby, uterine fibroids (obviously hoping it's not that), or more than one baby. I don't really think it is the latter, since only one heartbeat has been heard up until now. (Although, no one was looking for two.)

We were supposed to have this appointment on Monday (12/1) but we had to reschedule it because the authorization didn't come through in time. Utterly ridiculous.
